Publications
Newrisk Limited's principal adviser, Dr Leivesley, has written publications on transportation security, including:
- Designing-in Risk and Continuity: International Issues for Rail Risk Management - by Dr Leivesley in the Rail Technology Magazine 2003, Vol. 4(4), 118: "Railways are leading exponents of risk management. Risk assessments on railways help increase network efficiency as well as safety. It is important to recognise that design risk failures are a key issue in rail risk management, especially when extreme loss events cause public outrage. Increasingly, extreme events risk assessment is being included within a total network risk assessment."
- Human Factor Risk Management: Counting the Cost of Human Factor Risk and Organisational Failures - by Dr Leivesley in the Rail Technology Magazine 2003, Vol. 4(5), 65: "Managing human factor failures and organisational failures are serious challenges for network operations. [This Article] looks at the potential dangers and assesses the increasing use of near-real time operational risk management systems to help reduce corporate risk profiles."
- Road Safety Enforcement: A Literature Review - Report for the Federal Office of Road Safety (Australia) (August 1987): "This report examines the application of resources and means of maximising enforcement strategies for road safety. Human factors, the law, policing, and mechanical design are analysed as part of the road safety system. Contributions from police in Australia and other countries are included. The results of the analysis identify the complex interactions between human factors and the road environment, and the conclusions list a number of strategies for the development of road safety enforcement policy which takes these into account."
Newrisk Limited's principal adviser, Dr Leivesley, has also been cited in various publications on transportation issues, including:
- 'Is missing Malaysian jet the world’s first CYBER HIJACK? Chilling new theory claims hackers could use a mobile phone to take over the controls' by Wills Robinson, Daily Mail Online, 16 March 2014: "Dr Leivesley, who now prepares businesses and governments for potential terrorist attacks, told the Sunday Express: 'There appears to be an element of planning from someone with a very sophisticated systems engineering understanding. This is a very early version of what I would call a smart plane, a fly-by-wire aircraft controlled by electronic signals. She added that once the plane is air-side, you can insert a set of commands and codes which can begin a new set of processes."
- ''World's First Cyber Hijack: Was Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight Hacked with Mobile Phone' by James Fielding and Stuart Winter in the Sunday Express, 16 March 2014: "British anti-terror expert Dr Sally Leivesley said last night: “It might well be the world’s first cyber hijack."
- 'Outsourced IT Offers Hackers Access to Key Control Systems' by Mark Hennessy in Irish Times, 2 May 2013, discussing cyber security: "The North Koreans have been blamed for interrupting websites run in South Korea by banks, newspapers and TV companies in “a show and tell” warning about what they are capable of during a conflict, warns Sally Leivesley of Newrisk. The South Koreans have taken the warning seriously, upgrading security at their nuclear plants – including disabling every USB port in every computer at the plants lest they be used to breach defences."
